June 26, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Motorcyclists Need to Ride Safely During Summer Season

Whether riding a chopper, racer, cruiser or hog, all motorcyclists need to ride safely, especially during the summer months when roads are busier and more dangerous. Some motorcyclists may choose to overlook certain safe riding practices because they seem to hinder the fun and excitement of traveling down the open road. However, there are a variety of effective safety measures riders can and should follow to reduce the chance of motorcycle accidents and prevent injuries to themselves, their passengers and other motorists and to avoid damage to their cycles.

The road to hog heaven is paved with good rides and traffic dangers, especially during the warmer summer months when highways are full and construction abounds. Poor driving practices like distracted driving and tailgating also cause accidents with motorcycles. Riders are 37 times more likely to die and nine times more likely to be injured in a vehicle crash than other motorists, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data from 2008. In 2008 alone, 5,290 motorcyclists were killed and 96,000 were injured.

Choosing to Ride Safely

Before motorcyclists embark on any open road adventures, they should take formal motorcycle safety training, practice safe and defensive riding techniques and know how to respond to various dangers like strong winds, wet or sandy roads and uneven surfaces. Riders should invest in appropriate protective gear like leather clothing, sturdy boots, helmets and specialized sunglasses or goggles. Wearing bright colors and reflective strips also improves visibility on the road, where riders should take further safety measures.

When riding, motorcyclists should obey standard traffic laws like posted speed limits and proper use of turn signals. However, because motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles, riders should also be aware that motorists may have greater difficulty seeing them. To counteract these visibility issues, motorcyclists should use horns, headlights, brake lights and lane positioning strategically and provide more space between them other vehicles, which gives more time to anticipate changing conditions and react to other drivers' actions.

Injury and Damage Prevention

Even if motorcyclists choose to ride safely and practice due diligence in driving defensively to protect themselves and their passengers, accidents still happen. Whether it is due to environmental conditions or the dangerous driving habits of other motorists, more motorcyclists and their passengers are still injured and killed while riding during summers. There are legal options that injured riders, and their families in the event of death, can pursue when a crash occurs because of driver negligence.

Contact a local personal injury attorney with experience in motorcycle accidents to discuss suing negligent parties and their insurance providers for compensation to cover medical bills, motorcycle damage, pain and suffering, lost wages and, in some cases, wrongful death.
